Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by students.
Each year 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are invited to join South River’s Science Olympiad team. There are 16 events that students study and practice for in preparation for two tournaments each year. South River participates in the L’Anse Creuse district tournament in April and the Macomb County tournament in May. All team members will compete at the district level and only 15 students compete at county.
Students are placed into two or three events to learn and prepare for competition. If a student is on the Science Olympiad team, then a parent is required to coach one of the events. This requirement of having parents coach helps the team, and provides parents of team members a chance to be part of the Science Olympiad experience. Students and their parents will meet once a week at South River to practice and learn the events. There are both study events and hands-on events.
L’Anse Creuse and South River has a long-standing history of success and a competitive spirit. We are proud of our team and encourage students to come forward to participate in the Science Olympiad experience.
