Lobbestael Activities / Clubs
Buddy Classrooms
Each class has a "buddy class" in which an upper elementary classroom partners with a lower elementary classroom. The two groups get together and share reading time and other learning activities.
Bus Helpers
To assist in the safety of our students, selected fifth grade students are assigned to a Kindergarten class and specific bus. The fifth grade students are responsible for helping the Kindergarten student get to the bus at the end of the day safely. The fifth grade students go to the classroom and escort the Kindergarten students to bus.
Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by students.
Each year 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are invited to join Lobbestael’s Science Olympiad team. There are 16 events that students study and practice for in preparation for two tournaments each year. Lobbestael participates in the L’Anse Creuse district tournament in April and the Macomb County tournament in May. All team members will compete at the district level and only 15 students compete at county.
Student Broadcasting
Students in fifth grades learn how to operate the camera, gather information and create the news reports and "go live" and share the news with our students on a daily basis through our building wide broadcasting system. The students are provided initial training and then they are responsible for the production.
Student Representatives
Students in grades 3-5 apply for the position of student representative. They must prepare a speech, get recommendations and then a vote is taken. There are two student representatives for each class. The students are involved in running the school store, providing fun activities for the student body and are also involved in assisting with making some of the building decisions.
Wee Deliver Inner School Postal System
Our Wee Deliver Postal System, which is an inner school postal system is open for business throughout the school year. The students have an opportunity to write letters to other students or staff within the building. Parents and friends can also write letters to students. The is a Wee Deliver mailbox in the main hallway where all mail is collected for processing and delivery. Students in grades 4 & 5 have an opportunity to apply for positions such as: Post Master, Facer, Nixie Clerk, Carrier and Sorter. These students fill out an application, take a postal exam and take part in an interview for the job. Each classroom in the building has a street address designed by the occupants of that address. The program provides many "real life" experiences for our students.
